Kua number

With the February boundary applied — the year here begins at Li Chun, around the 4th, not on 1 January. Calculators that use the calendar year are wrong for everyone born in the first five weeks of a year, and none of them mention it.

Your four directions

The other four

Not carried here: which of your four is Sheng Chi, which is Tien Yi and which is Nien Yen. That ranking comes from a table rather than from the square, and guessing at it would have somebody turn a bed to face the wrong wall. Fu Wei is shown, because it is simply the direction of your own number.

The arithmetic, in full

Add the last two digits of the year and reduce to one digit. Then:

  • Before 2000 — a man takes 10 minus that; a woman adds 5.
  • 2000 onward — a man takes 9 minus that; a woman adds 6.

Reduce again if the answer is above nine. A 5 is replaced — by 2 for a man, 8 for a woman — because 5 sits at the centre of the square and the centre has no direction.

Every one of those steps is printed beside your answer, so the number can be checked rather than taken on faith.

The February boundary, which is where most calculators fail

The year in this formula is the solar year, and it begins at Li Chun — around 4 February — not on 1 January. Somebody born on 20 January 1990 belongs to 1989 and has Kua 2, not Kua 1. That is a different group and a different set of directions.

Li Chun itself moves between the 3rd and the 5th depending on the year, so a birth within a day of it is flagged here rather than quietly decided. Check the exact date for that year before acting on the answer.

Why the directions are not a lookup table

The Lo Shu square — the same square the grid calculator draws — is the Later Heaven bagua. Read it as a compass and every number has a direction:

SE  S  SW     4  9  2
E   ·   W    =  3  5  7
NE  N  NW     8  1  6

So the east group — 1, 3, 4, 9 — occupies north, east, south-east and south, and the west group — 2, 6, 7, 8 — occupies south-west, north-west, west and north-east. Your four auspicious directions are the four your own group sits in. None of that needs a table; it falls out of the square, and it is why the two calculators on this site are really one idea seen twice.

Where this page stops, and why

The finer ranking — Sheng Chi for success, Tien Yi for health, Nien Yen for relationships, Fu Wei for personal growth — does not fall out of the square. It comes from a table, and this page does not carry one it cannot vouch for.

That is a deliberate gap, not an oversight. The whole point of a calculator is that its output can be acted on, and somebody acting on a wrong direction moves furniture. Fu Wei is given because it is derivable. The rest is left to your own source.

Which of your four directions to use, and for what.

That part is a reading, and it is given by a person — Lubna Faraz, who practises numerology, vastu and palmistry. The calculators here stay free; nothing is held back behind it.

What this page is. It works out a number from a date and names the directions that follow from it. It does not tell you what will happen in a room. What a direction means for a house or a person is a practitioner's judgement, and it is not something arithmetic can hand you. Nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice.
